Medications while travelling in country Like Nepal.

We are not the expert about medication, but working as a trekking Guide from last many years, we found some helpful medication for people travelling with us and what is very important to carry with you while you travelling in country like Nepal, India or Bhutan, and specially trekking in Himalayas. Some medicine will save your bad tummy cramp or headache.

Below is few of the medicine we try to put into list, so it might help other who are travelling.

Here are a list of medications and their uses for backcountry travels.  These medications will aid in your comfort when things don’t go as planned.  All medications will have a trade name and the generic name. Their availability may vary by country and some may need a prescription depending on your location.

Benadryl (diphenhydramine)  This is an antihistamine (allergy medication).  Here are the reasons it is in my medical kit:  It can treat seasonal allergies, allergic reactions, sleep aid, calms itching from bites and Stomach upset with Nausea.

Imodium (Loperamide) This medication will aid in stopping Diarrhea after eating something that doesn’t agree.

Pepto bismol (Bismuth subsalicylate) Nausea, Diarrhea, upset stomach and Heartburn.  This is great in liquid or pill form.

Zofran (ondansetron) This is an anti-emetic (stops Vomiting and Nausea) prescribed in the USA.  This works well if you eat something that doesn’t like you.  If you no longer have an appetite or the stomach is doing flips then this is a great medication.  Let the tablet desolve under your tongue and 20 min later you should start feeling better.  Eat Bland, (rice and toast) until you are symptom free for a day.

Dramamine (Dimenhydrinate) Motion sickness can ruin a trip so if you get it this works well. It can also take the place of Zofran for Nausea.  Both are good to have.

Diamox (Acetazolamide) This is a medication for High Altitude 3000 meters or more.  It is actually a Diuretic (makes you pee)  So lots of fluids need to be consumed with this medication.  For best results you will need to start it two to three days before altitude.

Advil (Ibuprofen)  AKA “I BE BROKEN” if you are achy and sore this is a nice friend to have along. (caution if you are bleeding this will become worse)  Works great on headaches too.  Just eat something with it!

Tylenol (Acetaminophen) Have a fever? Pain? This is a great medication for virus’ such as a cold or flu.

Antibiotics: Really there is a huge problem in the world with drug resistant bacteria.  Please use any antibiotics wisely.

Cipro (ciprofloxacin) Gastric bugs from dirty water or foods.  This works great if you are having OMG Diarrhea that is watery.  No this does not treat to much beer Diarrhea!!
